On Monday, April 9, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it will allow consumers to keep and extend their current non-grandfathered individual and small group, pre-Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans (also called grandmothered plans) into 2019.
The option to extend non-grandfathered, pre-ACA plans was recently approved for all Iowa Health Insurers by the Iowa Insurance Division (IID). Wellmark supports this decision and has announced they will renew their Iowa grandmothered policies as allowed by the IID.
For Wellmark, this will directly impact their Individual and Family Plans (IFP), and Small Group Plans (those with 1–50 employees) grandmothered policies in Iowa.
As a reminder, grandmothered policies are plans generally purchased after the signing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on March 23, 2010 and before Jan. 1, 2014. Grandmothered plans are not subject to all ACA requirements.
Individual and Family Plans
The extension of qualified grandmothered IFP health plans into 2019 means members on these plans can maintain the same health coverage they have had in the past through Dec. 31, 2019. If members wish to renew their current plan, there is no action needed. They can expect to receive a renewal notice from Wellmark later this year about their options.
Small Group Plans
Small group policies will also be allowed to maintain their coverage into 2019. Small groups will have the option to renew their current plans for the 2019 plan year when they receive their renewal.
